These are real historical events that took place in the Ia Drang Valley in November 1965, a place unknown to most of our fellow citizens and a war that defies comprehension. This movie is a dedication to those young Americans who died in Death Valley and a tribute to the fighters of the People's Army of Vietnam who also fell on the battlefield.

The picture tells about the war in Vietnam. Coming to a foreign territory, the Americans meet a worthy response from the local military, forcing them to suffer huge losses. The film very vividly and colorfully shows the ruthlessness of this kind of war - when people die not so much for their country as for someone's political ambitions. This kind of movie should have a clear anti-war orientation, and this film copes with it very well.

The protagonist Hal Moore (played by Mel Gibson) leaves his family in a military town, realizing that most likely he will not return. And his eyes very well convey his attitude to everything that is happening. He gets young guys under his command, and the first time he looks at them he realizes that most of them will come back in black bags. In the first part of the movie is very well shown this confrontation of duty and inner rejection of what is happening. It also shows beautiful nature and artillery shells bursting in contrast. They are superfluous there, as well as Americans on a foreign land.

The second part of the movie is realistically shown fighting, real war, hail of bullets, grenades and fire. People are brutalized, killing each other - some people easily kill those who are surrounded, some burn others with fire. Gibson's character is shown not only as a professional, but also as a man of honor - he protects his guys, trying to fulfill his task, saving as many lives as possible, not leaving a single man on foreign soil. He is the first to go to the attack and the last to get into the helicopter to return to the base. On the one hand, this commands a lot of respect for the character, but on the other hand, it lacks at least some flaws in him. He is already essentially a war veteran, a man with a huge combat record, but his nervous system is absolutely balanced, both under bullets and in ordinary life. But this can be forgiven for a movie of those years, it used to be filmed like this. Let it not be too vital, but beautiful.

And there is a lot of beauty in the movie - the camerawork and the work of the artist is excellent, every detail is thought out, the helicopters against the background of beautiful nature fly so slender that you admire these shots. In general, I have rarely seen such beautifully shot war movies, as beautiful as a war movie can be. And at the same time it is quite realistic - the feeling of complete immersion inside the conflict is present throughout the battle.

If to be picky, besides the exceptional positivity of the heroes, I can also refer to the acting of some characters (for example, I didn't like the wife of the main character at all), the unrevealing of most of the characters (I lacked personalities on the battlefield) and a little typical American pathos (for those years still basically tolerable).

But on the whole, this is one of the best foreign war movies I've seen, and I definitely recommend it.
