A powerful “dark” drama, one of Truffaut's last films, which can be safely ranked among the masterpieces of world cinema, tells about the tragic, fatal love of the married Depardieu and his old mistress Ardan, who also got married and moved into the house next door to him. I don't think it's worth trying to recount the content of this picture, it's like listing what exactly is painted on impressionist canvases, but with Hitchcock's unrelenting suspense. This is one of those rare films that you can revisit and discover something subtly new each time. Truffaut revisits the theme of obsessive love, pain and the destruction it can lead to. Theater actress Ardan, who made a stunning film debut with this role, will also appear in Truffaut's latest film, A Merry Sunday.

A rather banal movie, which can only appeal to fans of typical melodramas, or to big fans of Truffaut. Even worse, the story itself is tragic, and if you want to know my honest opinion, it's not even nice to make such an indifferent movie about it. There are a lot of strained banal moments, some of which are ridiculous, like when Fanny Ardant melodramatically says to the child who drew the 'lonely whale': 'what do you know about loneliness?' This scene is so artificial that I didn't even know what to do: whether to blush or laugh. It's unclear who made Truffaut make a movie like this. The movie is directed and acted quite professionally, but by the standards of this director, it is completely passable. If you love Truffaut, but you haven't seen this movie, you did the right thing. If you are just about to get acquainted with Truffaut, I would advise you not to watch 'The Neighbor', because this outstanding director has a hundred times better films.
