'Confidentially Yours' is Truffaut's last film. The tape (specifically the tape) is striking in its cinematography, its black and white, its lightness. As is often the case with geniuses, their last films are either so exhausted that they are impossible to watch or secondary to their previous work. 'Sunday' falls into neither of these categories. Truffaut, in his film, seems to go back to the origins of the new wave of the 60s, when he and a few other 'Cahiers' workers started this trend.
As a director, Truffaut has changed with each new film and at the same time remained himself. His latest work is proof of that. Of course, this is not the same Truffaut who once shot '400 Blows', but nevertheless, this Truffaut has retained the same ease, the same amazing mastery of the means of cinematography to create an extraordinary, peculiar only to him, atmosphere.
François also pays tribute to Hitchcock in 'Sunday', although if you look closely at the French director's work, you can trace the influence of the famous 'master of suspense' in each of his films. 'Confidentially Yours' is beautiful from the first to the last frame, and even the final credits against the background of children kicking the camera detail are beautiful. The late Truffaut's muse Fanny Ardant, who I liked here much more than in 'The Neighbor', is also beautiful.
The plot in 'Sunday' is taken as if from some cheap pulp-detective, as well as in all the movies of the new wave. Again, the movie is full of references - from the same Hitchcock to the veteran Stanley and his 'glorious tropes'. The soul rejoices in seeing it all. Definitely 'Confidentially Yours' is one of my favorite Truffaut films and the best 'final cut' a genius director can give out.
Truffaut didn't put a bunch of symbolism and meaning into his latest work, but just reminded us once again that 'cinema is alive' and happy for what it is. One would have to be a very strange cinephile not to like 'Sunday'.... That's my opinion and that's what it is. Although it's unlikely that François could count on this being his last movie, because he was working hard on the script of 'The Little Thief'.... It's a pity about the director, who died so young. Judging by 'Resurrection', he had some powder in his powders, and he could have given us many more wonderful pictures.
