Storyline
Theresa is a successful teacher of deaf children during the day but after a short unhappy affair starts to spend her nights cruising bars. Her craving first for sex but later also for drugs leads into increasingly demeaning and dangerous situations at odds with her daytime commitment to her children.

User Review
Perhaps this movie should be watched without knowing what real events it is based on. Then it makes a great impression with its looseness for those years, and the mess at the end, and, perhaps, the most interesting thing - the image of the main character Theresa.

This girl is really interesting in her own way. On the one hand, a modest, very charming teacher of deaf children. Pleasant, responsive, it seems that sincerely loves her work. In the evening and at night, she is a very relaxed person who sits in bars and picks up random men. She doesn't mind snorting coke and topping it off with a shot of alcohol. And it does not look like a banal split personality, just in Theresa calmly coexist two hypostases. She is somewhat infantile and has an underlying fear of punishment and retribution, as evidenced by her bizarre fantasies.

Based on her backstory, we can understand something: upbringing in a puritanical family, the example of her older sister, who is a very special person, a serious illness, the sexual revolution - all this has left its mark on the character of Teresa. But the special regret, by the way, does not cause neither she nor her sad fate - the heroine herself chose her path and passed it to the victorious end.

Life brings her together with three men, and it is one of these meetings ends more than deplorable for Teresa. Knowing the end, the only thing left to bet on is who will be the instigator of the mess: Tony or James. Clearly psychopathic, insane on the pumpkin, waving a knife Tony, played by a very young Richard Gere or cultured, intelligent and seemingly well-mannered social worker James, inside which rages the most real hurricane of emotions that do not find an outlet. However, the scriptwriter, or rather, life itself made an unexpected turn and brought on stage a former criminal Gary - another contender.

The ending doesn't seem so shocking, and the final scene is filmed quite effectively, but without too many shocking details. The most important thing is that it will seem logical as a result. Perhaps, even somewhat moralizing, say, do not go, girls, on bars to walk .... One thing's for sure, Theresa asked for her own end. Brooks, of course, as much as you can argue that this society is to blame, but the way of life Theresa left much to be desired.

The acting is more than good. And Diane Keaton, who can not be called femme fatale from any side, rather, in her own way attractive and shy and relaxed 'gray mouse'. And Richard Gere, who more than surprised the credibility in this image, especially if you remember his subsequent roles of honorable uncles. And not badly matched William Etherton, who has in his eyes there is something this .... abnormal. And Tom Berenger in the small but memorable role of Gary.

It's a little unclear who this movie was made for. It really isn't what you'd call an acutely social arthouse or intended to be a box office flop. The movie itself is a bit uneven - sometimes overlong, sometimes overly simplistic and straightforward.

But even now, it's not a bad looking movie. And may well serve as a warning for ladies with a similar lifestyle. A living example of what it can lead to. And a reason to think.
