The new fear of Shyamalan and his fans - old people, frightening, maddening, illogical, but very warm and heartfelt. “The Visit” is watched with interest, although it does not offer anything radically new.
Many years ago, an unruly daughter, falling in love with her teacher, broke off relations with her parents and ran away from home to another city. Years later, when the daughter has two children of her own, the family seems eager to reunite, but teenage grandchildren are sent on a scouting trip to restore relations with their grandparents. The children accompany their unexpected trip by shooting a movie about the history of their family, but the newfound grandparents are not very eager to remember the past. And in the present their behavior is sometimes alarming and even frightening - to spend a week with them is not easy.
In one of his interviews Shyamalan said that collected three montage versions of “Visit”: one is more like a comedy, the second - a creepy horror, and the third - “something in between”. The last one and went into wide distribution
Every time in anticipation of a new film by M. Night Shyamalan on all fronts is the same record: say, and his ideas have run out of steam, and his old directorial techniques are no longer impressive, and he became less frightening, and the psychological component of his old paintings somewhere evaporated. Nevertheless, wait for new stories Shyamalan, even as they wait, too great hope for a miracle, too strong interest in the unexpected stories and rooftop endings, which were once famous for this screenwriter and director. Here and “The Visit”, shrouded in mystery, frightening trailer and poster, before the beginning of its distribution looks like a tidbit, but what is hiding inside this fabulous gingerbread house with mysterious old men?
In contrast to Shyamalan's previous project “After Our Era,” which was the most expensive of his career, “The Visit” was the lowest-budgeted of the director's studio productions
Definitely, “The Visit” will not be the tape that will take a place in the top three best pictures Shyamalan, there have been his work and stronger. Do not attribute the tape to the flagships of the studio Blumhouse, rather it is some kind of mediocre from the second echelon - filmed quite simply, played heartily, but without frills, keeping in suspense, but mainly due to the viewer's imagination, not inventions of the authors. Undoubtedly, the fans of horror movies are waiting for a couple of impressive moments, when the screen tension is felt almost physically, and the proximity of not the most obvious denouement excites, but, alas, this is not “The Mysterious Forest”, not “Signs” and certainly not “The Sixth Sense”.
Shyamalan's biggest blunder this time was with the screenplay. I do not want to reveal the main plot twist, but the assumption that the grandchildren do not even remotely realize who their grandparents are, even if they have never communicated with them, looks very strained. Shyamalan, however, and before liked to pull the details of his mosaics by the ears, but the previous films from “The Visit” is distinguished by one essential feature - if earlier the author emphasized the supernatural, otherworldly or even alien forces, this time the mystical, frightening and well charming is explained quite simply, even banal. Whether it adds charm to the picture depends on your own view of things.
What you can't deny is the very skillfully played card of wariness towards old people. People of old age have been successfully frightened before, enough to remember the recent “Deborah Logan's Demons”, old men haunting the heroes of “It”, or numerous witches from a dozen other pictures, but Shyamalan frightens with familiar things, puzzling over nothing, attracting attention with obvious details, presented from a new angle. Grandpa keeps going to the far shed, but there's nothing there but trash? Grandma asks to clean the oven from the inside, but nothing terrible ends up happening? Neighbors and acquaintances suddenly appear and just as mysteriously disappear? The authors skillfully toss wood into the flaming fire of the audience's interest, and then the finale does not disappoint. And thank you for that.
Disappointing is rather not the most successful “koskos” under psychology. From time to time the action of the picture suddenly stops in order for the main characters, teenagers Becky and Tyler, frustrated on the subject of their abandoned father. It turns out to be extremely clumsy, even the “message from beyond” from “Signs” looked more logical and reasonable than the suffering imposed on the children of “The Visit”. Shyamalan in general, much in the movie wants to explain a special, childish view of life, but the imbalance of immediacy, rashness of many of their actions and broken emotionality of the characters is striking and somewhat spoils the feeling of the movie.
A good horror movie is easy enough to distinguish from a bad one: a bad movie you will never want to revisit. Indeed, knowing that “the killer - the chauffeur,” in what place will pop out a beech and which of the characters will survive, again sit down to the screen do not always want to far not always. “Visit”, fortunately, is not hopeless - even knowing the main old man's secret, repeat his trip to relatives will want, not soon, but will want to definitely. Shyamalan's damn grandmother is very colorful. And the kids were successful to the glory - they are worth each other and their ancestors. Or maybe not their ancestors...
