Italian Luca Guadagnino is still an undiscovered author for me today, and this is the first work I familiarized myself with just yesterday. 'Suspiria' and 'Call Me By Your Name' are shelved on my vishlist, so I have yet to form an opinion on this filmmaker, but for now I'll talk about his most scandalous work yet, 'Entirely', which took home a couple of Golden Lions in Venice.
I'm quite an impressionable person, but that doesn't stop me from watching all sorts of disgusting genre pictures a la body horror, slasher and other dismemberments on the screen. The main thing is that it should be artistically justified and appropriate. This picture is a proof of that, it is sharply different from everything Hollywood that we watch every day. It's pure European cinema and Italian vibe, but it's damn appealing. 'Ugly pleasant,' I'd even say. To tell the story of two young boys rejected by society who are cannibals is still an effort. Try not to go off on a tangent. To try to make a reffers to Bonnie and Clyde, well, or Romeo and Juliet, but without a tragic ending. The movie is about the fact that a man needs a man, and that he must understand you, look with you in the same direction, not in different ones. Even if the whole world is against you, there is always a soul mate.
The acting is great: I didn't think Shalame would be in the background here, judging by the poster. Taylor Russell steals all the screen time, and she does it well.
Great sound design: abrupt shifts between quiet scenes into screaming shock content that really freaks you out. Minimal soundtrack. Good camerawork: handheld twitchy camera work where needed, smooth and floaty where appropriate.
'Wholeheartedly' is a 'turned' road-movie melodrama with no beginning or end. The movie neither begins nor ends with anything. It is a provocative performance, which is contraindicated for many, so as not to induce feelings of nausea and panic. It's a festival canvas for connoisseurs of unconventional stories that can't be recommended to anyone. If you follow the cinematography, you'll watch it anyway. If you're not into the material, you don't need it, but you can give it a try.
