Sergio Martino's brutal Italian thriller continues the tradition of giallo. “Torso” is a story typical of the genre about students who are murdered by a serial maniac using a mysterious red-and-black handkerchief and a saw. Martino pays a lot of attention to the attributes that Italian giallo usually focuses on: close-ups of screaming and agonizing women, nude and overly eroticized bodies, and murder scenes shot with ferocious brutality. It is no coincidence that “Torso”, together with Bava's “Bay of Blood”, is recognized as one of the main predecessors of American slashers, in which exactly the same thing always happens - a young and free body is killed by an unknown psychopath.

If you consider the work of director Sergio Martino, then in it you will find not so many pictures that can be attributed to horror. Among them you can distinguish such films as 'God of Ogres', 'Amphibian Island' and 'The River of the Big Crocodile'. The lion's share of Sergio Martino's creations are comedies of frivolous content with a lot of naked beauties. And it should be noted that the director is clearly not indifferent to female nudity as. in fact, none of his movie is not without it. And the movie 'Torso' was no exception.
By genre the picture can be attributed to 'Gialo', the creator is Italian and the movie features close-ups of the victims' deaths. But if we compare it with the classics, then 'Torso' is more like a youth 'slasher', which became popular in the 80s after the work of John Carpenter. The reason lies in several factors: weak suspense, lack of elaborate deaths and slashers, a huge number of dying young people.
The picture's minuses do not end there. Returning to the predilections of Sergio Martino, it should be noted that the movie has plenty of naked young ladies and sex scenes (good thing the movie starts with a bed scene). Some will say that 'these are the laws of the genre - there is no nudity without nudity' and they will be wrong. If you remove the nudity of female characters from 'Torso', then there will remain: unimpressive scenes of murder, ridiculous maniac dressed up in a holey sock, with weak psychological motivation for his murders and not at all intriguing denouement.
Still, in a horror, thriller movie there should be something more than scenes ala 'Emanuelle's Adventures' and with the same musical accompaniment.
Bottom line: if you really like movies of the 70's era by definition and naked beauties - it is worth watching. But in general, the movie is absolutely unremarkable.
