Storyline
In Paris, the shy bureaucrat Trelkovsky rents an old apartment without bathroom where the previous tenant, the Egyptologist Simone Choule, committed suicide. The unfriendly concierge (Shelley Winters) and the tough landlord Mr. Zy establish stringent rules of behavior and Trelkovsky feels ridden by his neighbors. Meanwhile he visits Simone in the hospital and befriends her girlfriend Stella. After the death of Simone, Trelkovsky feels obsessed for her and believes his landlord and neighbors are plotting a scheme to force him to also commit suicide.

I can definitely refer this film to my favorite genre - a mixture of mysticism, where reality is intertwined with schizophrenia, really dark atmosphere and subtle black humor, which does not turn the picture into a tasteless balaganza.

Only outstanding directors are able to mix it all together. Time has not aged this movie at all, but as a good chair gave it the effect of 'shabby chic'.

I only found out about Isabelle Adjani here. The role of nymphomaniac her 100% (like Monica Bellucci). A terrific actress.

Watch for thinking men and intelligent women. Alone and with a shot of cognac.
