A biographical movie about singer Bob Dylan will cover the period of his life from 1961 to 1965 and will tell about the musical development of the artist.

User Review

Nowadays, movies about famous people are no longer surprising. Most often they are a set of vivid episodes from the life of one or another person, where there is virtually no genre uniqueness. Many of these projects are made either with the aim of awards, or, as they say, 'to order'. James Mangold's new film about the rise of the legendary Bob Dylan was expected to be something roughly in the category called 'Oscar-bait'. Contrary to personal misgivings, the biopic turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

The movie tells the story of the musician's formative years and focuses solely on the period from 1961 to 1965. It does not attempt to meticulously, like a documentary, retell Dylan's entire life from childhood to old age. The story of the movie covers exactly the time period when the singer and brilliant songwriter came out of nowhere and changed the culture once and for all in 4 years. 'Nobody Known' is not only a true story about the beginning of the great musician's journey, it is also a movie about the era. The atmosphere of the first half of the sixties in the movie is reproduced just marvelously. The threat of nuclear war, John F. Kennedy's assassination, the war in Vietnam - all these events are very vividly emphasized by the director and allow us to see the true importance of Dylan's figure for the whole industry. A very young kid with his stubborn character and sincere songs was able to reach the hearts of people of that time. The movie doesn't try to throw the significant events from the musician's life in a straightforward way, it shows on an emotional level exactly what Bob Dylan was so caught up in at the time. Some scenes, like the performance of 'The Times They Are a-Changin'' at a folk festival, make you feel the audience's satisfaction at seeing a man who was not afraid to speak directly and honestly about the problems of the world in a difficult time.

The movie takes a completely different emotional stage when it shows the inner contradictions of the musician after the surge of popularity. Here one can see the egoism, audacity, and oppression of a man facing the beginning of media life in a big city. But perhaps this is what allowed Dylan himself to revise his views on creativity and rediscover his vision of the world through rock music. The climax of the movie builds on just that. The leading performer of folk music becomes a rocker and this turn in Dylan's career becomes a resonance. The emotion of his final performance, full of scandal and misunderstanding on the part of the audience, causes genuine delight, and the staging of the scene itself deserves the best praise. This episode shows the true essence of Bob Dylan: even under the threat of being canceled, he never stops believing in his principles and strives to infect his audience with them at least a little.

Timothee Chalamet is peerless. In fact, the entire movie is built on his acting and in not a single scene does he ever make you doubt that he is Bob Dylan. His subtlety coupled with painstaking work on recreating the facial expressions and demeanor of the musician in real life is admirable. But the actor's real achievement was the decision to perform all of Dylan's songs himself. And, if you listen to his performance at least in the trailer for the movie, you will be at least impressed. All in all, a perfect acting job, deservedly recognized with an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (hopefully, Shalame will go on to win).

Aside from the main star, there is more than one fine acting job to be highlighted in the movie. Edward Norton is always a pleasure to watch, especially when he embodies such soulful people on screen. Charming Elle Fanning gives the movie the necessary charge of chemistry with Timothy Chalamet, but, in my subjective opinion, her storyline is rather faded and not the most obligatory. The most striking supporting character, however, is folk singer Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro. Their scenes together with Chalamet created the most romantic and musical moments in the movie. By the way, Barbaro and Norton also earned 'Oscar' nominations for their roles.

Sitting through the closing credits of the movie and listening to Dylan's great song 'Like a Rolling Stone' kept me inspired, which I tried to imbue this review with as well. The movie turned out to be incredibly emotional and uplifting. It will be especially interesting for creative people with a long history or for young and promising people who want to make their mark on the world through art.
