I remember when reading various interviews with Samuel L. Jackson, I have noticed many times that 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' is his favorite movie of all those in which he acted, and when it starts to be shown on TV, Sam breaks away from all his affairs to watch this movie. I totally get it!
What is it about this movie? It has everything you need to be a cult movie. I'll tell you more about it.
The script for the movie was written by Shane Black, I think fans of the action genre know this name very well, because it was he who gave us the most wonderful characters of 'The Last Boy Scout', 'Lethal Weapon' and 'The Last Movie Hero'. He didn't slack off here either. Mitch Hennessey and Samantha Kane/Charlie Baltimore are perhaps the most interesting characters of Samuel L. Jackson and Geena Davis. Good in their own way, bad in their own way, they are shown from all sides, and when watching the movie you don't get the feeling that you are facing some fake dummies.
On the contrary - real live people, whom you really empathize with. It is quite difficult to predict their actions, for their characters are quite deep. In general, all the actors in the movie are good, they play amazingly. I still remember the moment when 'One-Eyed Jack' in prison looks at the TV and yells, not believing his eyes, 'IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!'. - it's so emotional, I still get shivers watching it.
In general, the plot develops in a completely unpredictable way. It is quite difficult to understand who is who and what someone needs, so it is VERY interesting to follow the action on the screen!
Of course, a good script without a suitable production is.... You know what I mean. But there's nothing wrong with that here. Renny Harlin is one of the most underrated directors out there. The way he directs movies. It's amazing. You know, 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' is one of his most powerful movies, as good as his masterpieces 'Die Hard 2' and 'Cutthroat Island'. The whole movie is probably his apotheosis of genre combinatorics. At first we are shown a blue-blood thriller mixed with drama.
Then comes the A-grade action movie. Harlin is a real specialist in beautiful shootouts, chases and explosions. Here all this is present in full. Of course, some of the special effects are done with graphics and today it's not so amazing, but it's still great. Plus, there is humor in the movie, not stupid, toilet, but quite funny, besides, it is everywhere to the place.
And finally, as a music lover, I can't help but talk about the soundtrack. It's one of my favorite soundtracks. Stylistics - rock, soul, jazz, blues. I should note that all the tunes here are to the point, as well as the humor. They complement the moments of the movie perfectly. My favorites unfold to songs by Santana, Muddy Waters, LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, and Jars Of Clay. Also successful is the title theme, written by Alan Silvestri.
All in all we have one of the best movies ever made by Sam Jackson, Geena Davis and Renny Harlin. It's just a shame it flopped....
