The local “gold king” does not shy away from any means to drive the miners out of their plots and take over everything. He offers them a deal, and they are about to give up. But then a mysterious horseman dressed as a priest appears and offers them unexpected help. Fans of westerns will not be able to complain about the lack of shooting and fights.

Deciding that if I watched a few of Eastwood's movies a week, I could someday get through absolutely all of them, I started digging around and found Pale Rider, which was released in 1985, but looks like it could have been made anytime. Completely boring and predictable almost to the exact number of corpses, the story (good settlers, evil enslaver, brave stranger savior) is bolstered by only one significant attraction - Eastwood the actor.

Eastwood the actor and that says it all. In particularly poignant moments, the camera sort of fearfully captures Clint from deliberately squat angles. Look, how cool and huge he is, this slightly aging titan with the appropriate unshavenness, revolver, signature look and rattling spurs. While you can find more than one interesting name in the casting of the tape (Billy Drago, the gorgeous bastard in white from “The Untouchables”, here for a minute of time only), Eastwood replaces literally everything alive. When he's not in the frame, you immediately wish that a man from nowhere would appear in it, because it's not very interesting to watch the reflexion of a bitchy and simply tired of such a life of a woman, constantly babbling about her daughter's dead dog and attempts at heroism of a good-natured gold digger. Clint is both the weakness and strength of the movie. He is, of course, a death machine, we know that, but when the stranger protects absolute brats (at the gold mine and even to defend themselves with firearms do not think), and fights against completely sketchy villains, to whom and time is not really given, it becomes a little uncomfortable from such a spectacle. It comes to the point that almost everyone who can fall in love with his mysterious character to a certain extent, except that only especially embittered enemies are not affected by this process.

Amusing, however, far from this peculiar egoism, and not even the fact that Eastwood's hero is not traded for trifles - he reloads his deadly revolver not by inserting new cartridges, but simply changing the drums. After only seven years, Clint will shoot his “Unforgiven”, which literally all the strains of adventure “Pale Rider” torn to microscopic shreds. Good stately stranger will turn evil mercenary with a black soul, and impenetrable cool Eastwood, increasing literally with each new wrinkle, dilute the incredible cast, which is still lacking here.
