With Paolo Sorrentino's latest movie, Partenope, I didn't make love at first sight. The first viewing was a couple of months ago, in the theater, in the original language and with the known fact that I was watching a 15-minute shortened version. The movie seemed to me too metaphorical, extremely dragging and there was no desire to think and unravel the hidden meanings. And now there is a dubbed version of the movie in the original timing. And somehow the movie opened for me in a different way.

Everyone familiar with Sorrentino's work knows that the main epithet for his films is “beauty”. The movie that won an Oscar in 2014 was called “The Great Beauty”, and this title would also suit his new work, which premiered in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival. Here beauty is multifaceted: it is the protagonist, named after the siren-founder of Naples; and the city itself with its terraces by the sea; and the longing that pervades every frame. Naples here is not just a backdrop, but the soul of the story. Sorrentino has removed personal memories, leaving the city as a quiet co-author: noisy family dinners on the terrace, secret meetings in Capri, streets where luxury neighbors poverty.

From the first minutes, Partenope (the brilliant debut of Celeste Dalla Porta) is the center of the universe. Born in the waters of the bay, she grows into a girl whose beauty drives men crazy. But Sorrentino makes it clear: her true strength is not in her bikini and sexy smoking skills, but in her mind. Becoming a student-anthropologist, she argues with professors, explores the “cultural boundaries of the marvelous” and rejects the label of “cold” - “I just grew up”.

What gives the movie special depth are the “shadows of the past, present and future.” The drunken writer John Cheever (a magnificent Gary Oldman) whose phrases like “What happened to the plans we made on drunken nights?” sound like an epitaph to lost dreams, the mad actress who mirrors Partenope's fears about the future, the depraved priest, Partenope's antonym, who delighted her with his audacity and said at her feet that “his body was made to be rejected.” Each hero she meets becomes a certain life mentor for her, developing in her her feminine strength and wisdom.

Sorrentino's use of symbols, unusual shots, and slight madness is riveting. The pace of the movie is its main disadvantage, it is insanely beautiful and melancholy picture, definitely this movie is not for everyone. I advise those who are ready to immerse themselves in Sorrentino's world again, for those who appreciate cinema as a visual art, for all those who believe that even after losses you can find the strength to live.
