Diana Scott is a young, attractive model living in London. Diana firmly believes that she deserves a better life and strives to achieve this goal by any means necessary. She has never been shy about using sexual relationships to further her career. After some time, she seems to find her “treasure.”
She meets the famous journalist Robert Gold, who not only introduces her to high society, but also leaves his family for her. After a while, Julie gets bored with this circle of friends. She wants something “bigger” — to become a movie star... Leaving Robert, who has become boring to her, she marries an Italian prince. But, having become Princess Diana, she finds herself a prisoner in the palace of an Italian magnate.
She becomes bored in this golden cage and attempts to return to Robert, but he rejects her.
User Review
John Schlesinger's film reveals the story of a modern-day Cinderella who built a successful career for herself but ended up with nothing. Although her life ends happily (she became the lawful wife of an Italian count), this happiness is illusory. The height of her dreams is living in a huge castle! Why is it illusory? Because she is bored, she feels no joy from such a life, and what's more, she suffers and cries in her bed when she is alone. And Diana Scott, having reached the “heights,” experiences spiritual anguish. She even runs away from the count's castle, but the feeling of loneliness, or rather the longing for luxury, forces her to return.
The heroine of the film is completely amoral. Men are just another step in her career, a means to an end. She is talentless and incapable of anything. A minor role in a film, an advertisement for candy, a portrait on the cover of a magazine — that's about it. Her romantic escapades can be understood as an escape from loneliness, and her departure from each partner as an inability to find common ground.
The talent of the creators of this film is undeniable. Actor Dirk Bogarde is, of course, unrivaled. In addition, Lawrence Harvey looked good here (he reminded me of actor Leonid Dyachkov in appearance), but Julie Christie caused me to dislike her purely because of her appearance and acting.
So, Schlesinger's film reflects the spirit of its time, although it is still relevant today and will certainly not leave the viewer indifferent.
