Alex Garland is one of the most notable directors of our time, whose work is difficult to overlook. It is quite challenging, being a fan of auteur and extraordinary cinema. The auteur, in collaboration with A24, continues to impress with his individuality and original approach.
This time, Ray Mendoza served as his partner in the director's chair, as well as co-writer of the script. An interesting personality, whose experience in “hot spots” has grown into the role of consultant on the set. Thanks to him, we are given the opportunity to see events under the microscope of reality, turning actions inside out, contrary to the usual pompous and condescending algorithm that many directors are guilty of. If conveyor belt merits are regarded only as a form of entertainment and forgotten without a trace, the case with Garland and Mendoza's current work is quite the opposite. Be prepared for claustrophobia with atmospheric pressure turned up to the max. I am afraid to even imagine the emotional impact of this incident if it had been filmed in one shot.
The events take place in 2006. A restored account of the rescue operation of American soldiers from enemy encirclement in Iraq.
It is important to understand that you need to be prepared to watch this film. These 90 minutes will not try to entertain you, whet your appetite, or lift your spirits. There is no soundtrack or melodic tricks to stir up emotions. There are no artificial scripted “flavor enhancers” or other plot twists. The material presented has no beginning and no end. There is only a moment that will seem like an eternity to the participants in this mess, but for the viewer, it will be a voluntary descent into hell.
The introduction to Eric Prydz's Call on Me is a discouragingly ambiguous scene. On the one hand, there are young guys fooling around, full of energy and with a bright future ahead of them. On the other hand, young guys who are full of energy and possibly deprived of a great future are fooling around. The fragment successfully harmonizes between an amusing reaction and a simultaneously gloomy tone, which pushes the viewer toward a feeling of possible impending doom and delicate sympathy from the very first minutes. This is the only composition that will be heard throughout the entire duration of the events.
Many are accustomed to seeing idealized and pretentious images on the screen. There is a tendency to project the false as the real, presenting yet another cliché of fevered imagination. If you are tired of all this naivety in the genre, then it's time to take a look at Warfare. The concept screams that it should be taken literally, as if it were real. This is the essence of the project and its main virtue. Without trying to embellish or smooth things over. It may seem arrogant, but it is worth acknowledging that it is much more difficult to make an interesting film about something “simple” than to shoot an expensive and loudly rustling candy wrapper. Mike Leigh's direction is a perfect example of this. As for Garland and Mendoza's direction, their tandem managed to achieve great internal productivity in just one location. This is largely due, of course, to their meticulous illustration of real events.
The first half demonstrates the most exciting and beautifully crafted cycle of actions, which is seriously nerve-wracking. Towards the end, the rhythm of pulsation and all the charm begins to fade, but perhaps some will find such a storm after the calm no less interesting.
