Detective stories are a long-established genre. It's difficult to come up with something new, even if you try very hard. You have to skillfully revive the old. In 2015, the HBO series True Detective hit the screens, and it was a real sensation: Hollywood stars in the lead roles, neo-noir, a convoluted story. All this greatly dilutes the archaic nature of the genre.

Imagine that The Little Things is a big episode of True Detective with its American South and clever maniacs. There's a series of gruesome murders somewhere in the US, and there's a couple of tireless investigators. The cat-and-mouse game begins!

The film stars three Oscar winners: a weary cop, John Deacon (Denzel Washington), a hard-working young police officer, Jim Baxter (Rami Malek), and a very strange character, Albert Sparma (Jared Leto). Inquisitive minds will have no trouble figuring out who the antagonist is just by looking at the poster. But this doesn't spoil the intrigue at all, even though it may seem otherwise.

The film sometimes flirts with other genres. For example, in one scene, you will definitely see a nod to David Fincher and his cult classic Seven. Nevertheless, it all looks stylish and captivating.

The Little Things is a solid, slow-burning detective story strictly for fans of this genre. If you're just into Oscar winners grimly investigating dark cases, this movie is definitely for you.
