I watched this film in 2000. Before that, I saw an advertisement for it, and I really liked it. But I couldn't find Spawn anywhere on sale. And then, finally, I found it at my classmate's house!

The film is based on comics. This is always alarming, because comics are essentially lowbrow, not even literature. Of course, this does not mean that they are all bad and unreadable, and that you cannot make a good film based on them. Spawn became one of those glossy heroes who ushered in a new era of comic book adaptations. It was after this film, not Batman, that a series of similar works began: X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Hulk, etc.

I'll say right away that the film is a success. It is more interesting than mass-market fare such as Spider-Man or Daredevil, the script is quite original, and it has a minimum of clichés compared to many similar films. The hero of the film, Scum, is also created without any particular borrowings. His personality is quite deeply developed. Throughout the film, we see how the hero changes from an evil and cruel killer to a defender of the oppressed and honest people.

Everything is shot well, the special effects and computer graphics are top-notch, the shootouts and fights are very impressive, and the soundtrack is heavy and well done, creating an amazing atmosphere. All the actors performed well, although I was a little surprised that the main character was African American... How many superheroes do you remember who don't look European? For me, this was also a revelation. But Michael J. White played Spawn excellently. After watching the film, you can't even imagine who could have done it better than him.

The only downside to Spawn is that it's a one-time movie. More precisely, a few times, but in the end, it still gets boring. Of course, compared to many films of the present day, some of which you don't want to watch again, or even finish, this film stands out in this respect.

To sum up, I would say that this is one of the best comic book adaptations, which I liked much more than all sorts of trash like Daredevil, Catwoman, Elektra, etc. For those who haven't seen it, I recommend watching it. It's not a given that you'll be thrilled, but you definitely won't be disappointed.
