Jacob Singer, wounded in Vietnam, returns home to New York. Tormented by memories of his son and the horrors of war, Jacob gradually loses touch with reality. But in the end, it turns out that his friend Louis is the only person Jacob can count on. Things take an even darker turn when he learns that his comrades-in-arms are suffering from similar hallucinations.

User Review

After death, we will have to fight with ourselves for our own souls. After death, everything will immediately fall into place. Either we will go down, or we will go up Jacob's ladder. We will stand to the right or left of Christ. Everything we have done in life, all our deeds, actions, words, and thoughts—everything is weighed by the Judge. After death, our deceased relatives and loved ones who are still living on earth help us with their prayers. His deceased son Gabe, his wife Sarah and her children, and the bone setter Louis (his guardian angel) helped Jacob Singer settle into the evangelical heavenly abodes.
The film contains many references to the biblical understanding of the afterlife. The original title of the film is ‘Dante's Inferno’, which translates as ‘Dante's Devil’. Dante Alighieri, who lived in the 14th century, is known to have written the famous work ‘The Divine Comedy’, in which he described Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise in song form. The camera often focuses on crosses. In a deleted scene in a hotel, there was a Bible on the bedside table. Almost all of the characters' names are biblical. Jacob, studying demonology, looked at engravings by Doré, known for his illustrations of biblical scenes. It is a pity that there is a cut version of the film in Russia. It was shortened by a whole 15 minutes. In one of the three deleted final scenes, Jacob, arriving at the house where his family lives, meets his bedmate Jezzie, who turns into that very dark creature with a black film/rag on her head. Overcoming his fear, he approaches her and removes the film/rag, only to see his own devilishly smiling head. It turns out that the whole struggle was with himself, with his dark side, with his sins and wrongdoings.

The film is good. The atmosphere, created by the mournful, disturbing, dark plot and gloomy music, is relieved at the end by bright rays of sunshine, which brings the viewer emotional relief. Perhaps death also brings relief, but not to everyone. Some will live in this hell forever, while others will be saved from this horror. Our nasty, vulgar, and terrible thoughts, actions, and words are the hell that we accumulate and multiply for ourselves throughout our earthly lives. We need to remember death more often, preferably every day. Then we will understand how to live correctly, how to treat people who can help us at the judgment, and we will realize what deeds to do and what goals and tasks to set for ourselves. Then there is a chance to be saved from ourselves, ugly, sinful, wrong, and perverted.
