In ‘The Devil's Rejects’, imo, Rob Zombie (real name Robert Cummings, former leader of the band ‘White Zombie’) came very close to Quentin Tarantino. This is evident in the character development, dialogue, film references, plot, and filming style. It's no wonder Zombie was invited to participate in ‘Grind House’. If the first film is bloody, nasty, brutal, and naturalistic, the second (with the same budget of $7 million) is a tribute to the crazy seventies, a real exploitation hardcore grindhouse road movie, uncompromising, ironic, darkly humorous, and very exciting!
It plays with the audience in the old “love the criminal” game - the sexy Babyface and Otis (Natural Born Killers) torture hostages in a roadside motel (the beginning of From Dusk Till Dawn). But when they themselves fall into the hands of the sheriff, who nails them to chairs and does other amusing things, you find yourself sympathizing with the former sadists. The absence of a happy ending (Thelma & Louise) and the poignant original ending, when the beloved criminals break through the police cordon - that's where the real joy lies! Romance, soundtrack, and split-screen (frame divided vertically and horizontally, action shown simultaneously) of the 70s and 80s. The word ‘fuck’ uttered 560 times (dialogue with a farmer - pure Q.T.) and a whole ‘pussy wagon’ © of different ‘tutty-fucking-frutty’!
