While traveling around the city in search of new customers, a female sales representative selling cosmetics finds a strange guy with garden shears instead of hands in an old mansion. It turns out that he is an artificial intelligent being whose elderly creator died before he could give his creation human hands. Although the young man knows nothing about the world around him and cannot do many of the things that people use their hands for, people gradually get used to him and begin to use his services as a gardener and hairdresser. The daughter of the woman who found the “homunculus” also gradually adapts to her new neighbor and even falls in love with him.

User Review

When I was given the opportunity to watch this film, I was sure it was a parody of a horror movie or something along those lines. Leafing through the posters and stills from the film, I remembered that I had already seen this film a long time ago...

A five- or six-year-old girl was left alone on a frosty winter evening. The Christmas tree was decorated with old family toys, paper snowflakes were stuck to the windows, and real, fluffy snowflakes swirled outside the windows, dancing in the orange light of the streetlamp in a winter waltz. The girl sat on the sofa and was afraid to put her feet down (what if something under the sofa would bite her leg?), so she put all her toys on it (to make it less scary).

Her parents left her a cassette with cartoons, but she was afraid to get up from the sofa, so the girl, wrapped in her mother's sweater and holding the remote control with both hands, switched TV channels... that's how she met Edward, just as he was trying to open the door with his scissor hands. The girl became frightened, but she couldn't change the channel because she felt that this scary man was actually kind.
I was literally overwhelmed with feelings at that moment. I felt sorry for Edward, but I didn't understand why. It seemed to me that Edward should be feared, but at the same time, it was clear that he himself was afraid. I didn't know how to feel about him, because in all the cartoons, the evil characters were scary and dressed in black, but Edward didn't want to be evil! Or did he?

When my parents came and asked why I wasn't watching the cartoon on the tape, I replied that I was watching a movie, but I couldn't say who the movie was about.

After that, I often dreamed about Edward, a dark, empty castle, and green, shorn figures...

Years passed, and as often happens, much was forgotten. Edward was forgotten, only a vague image remained. The dreams were forgotten, turning into fragments of words and colors. The confusion of feelings was forgotten, as I inevitably grew up and many things became ordinary.

And now, I'm looking through photos and posters from the film... there's something familiar in the features of the guy depicted in them, something barely perceptible, almost non-existent. With a strange feeling of uneasy foreboding, I press play and... from the first notes of Danny Elfman's enchanting music, my feet lift off the floor and I sit as I did long ago, on that winter evening on the sofa, tucking my legs under me.

Often, when you wake up, you remember clearly that you had a dream, but no matter how hard you try, you can't remember what it was about. But sometimes in the middle of the day, some event or action, even someone's gesture or smile, an object of a certain color or shape, can make you remember a forgotten dream in minute detail. You suddenly plunge into your dream, instantly reliving all the events, emotions, and feelings that were there, and in an instant, the night's events take their rightful place on the endless shelves of your memory from beginning to end, as if someone editing your mind had inserted a couple hundred frames.

And so I plunged into the past as soon as I heard the melody. And now, having watched the film ten years later, I certainly understand who is evil and who is good in it, but the feeling of childhood, in the full sense of the word, when a child has the right to remain a child, has the right to be surprised and ask questions, to receive answers to them, when they have the right not to understand and not to agree with the generally accepted, has returned.

Therefore, I will not talk about the work of the actors, cameramen, costume designers, or film crew; none of that is important to me. I do not need to break Edward down into its constituent parts. For me, this film is a shelf in my memory that I can pull out at any time without fear of losing its contents.
