User Review
According to film critics, this film is one of the best films of the new century. Before this film, I had never heard of director Edward Yang. But he is Taiwan's leading director. Yi Yi was Edward Yang's last film. I don't know why, but the Taiwanese director never made another film. And yet it was this 2000 film that brought him the most fame...
The theme raised by the director in this film is not new. The main character, En-Jie, is going through a midlife crisis. By chance, he meets his first love, with whom he broke up at a young age for reasons that were not clear at first. Gradually, the director begins to reveal this character to us. The plot of the film is very skillfully constructed. There are several storylines in the film that, at first glance, confuse the viewer and prevent them from focusing on the main character. But gradually, you begin to understand the director's ideas and allusions.
Edward Yang's characters are all people of considerable wealth. The main character, for example, is a businessman. With its atmosphere, long shots, and the dissatisfaction that seems to plague seemingly successful people, this film resembles Antonioni's films (except that the Italian director had a penchant for the cultural elite, which is not the case here). Edward Yang works with the cinematographer in a unique way. Let's say he is filming a conversation between two characters in a cafe. The camera is behind glass, about 15 meters away from the people talking. We hear the conversation, but we only see their outlines. There were several scenes like this in the film.
The film is well made, but it's not for everyone.
