Will their love withstand such a difficult test? Former hitman El Chivo takes on his last job—to kill a successful businessman. But chance intervenes again: Chivo learns that the murder was ordered by the victim's stepbrother. Can his love for the daughter he abandoned many years ago awaken something human in Chivo?

For me, it has long been more than just aesthetics or atmosphere, but a full-fledged and distinctive genre. But when watching the film Amores Perros, it suddenly becomes clear that chthonism can also be Mexican.

We are used to seeing Mexico in films through a yellow filter. We are used to expecting dust, heat, blurred silhouettes, and the smell of gasoline. Here, everything is different. In this film, everything is gray and muted, as if we are watching a documentary chronicle of a forgotten industrial city from the late Soviet era. Mexico City appears as a city without hope, without sun, without embellishment. And it is in this grayness that authenticity is born.
The director tells three stories. They intersect only indirectly, but complement and deepen each other. At some point, all three begin to seem a little irrational, each in its own way. The characters do things that don't always fit into the usual logic. Sometimes it's like they're trying to push the plot forward on their own. But this break doesn't ruin the story. On the contrary, the dramatic effect that comes as each storyline develops smooths out the inconsistencies and reinforces the film's inner truth.

From the very first scenes, it becomes clear that Alejandro González Iñárritu has his own style and vision. It is particularly remarkable to see such an expressive style already in his debut work. This film cannot be called textbook, but it certainly deserves attention. It exists somewhere on the border between European auteur cinema and Hollywood's desire for powerful, convex drama. Its strength lies in this balance.

Amores Perros does not offer answers and does not seek to please. It leaves the viewer with a feeling of a difficult but authentic experience. This is exactly how cinema works.
