Please name the ten best Chan films. Okay, name Jackie's fifteen most successful films. Great, but I only hear familiar names, all of which have long been known and memorized by fans. I bet that only a small number of people have seen this film, and in particular, most admirers of the great Chinese actor's work have not seen it at all.
The situation is simple: the film breaks away from the usual pattern of works where Chan plays the role of a funny guy who is inventive and skilled in kung fu. The genre is particularly noteworthy—an action film with a dramatic slant, which is unusual, to say the least.
Briefly about the plot: Jackie plays a cop (again!) who unwittingly learns about financial machinations among the police leadership. According to the laws of the genre, our alter ego considers it his duty to investigate the matter and find the culprits, since they are not particularly hiding.
The film is not bad, of course (and the early 90s were one of Jackie's most successful periods, along with the epoch-making 80s), but it falls a little short of the real, true Chan – funny, at once a darling of fortune and a fighter against crime. Here, he departs from his usual role, with virtually no smiles or trademark fights in the film, and generally conveys an excessive sense of resignation about what is happening.
I was a little disappointed by the complete lack of intrigue; the only question is whether the truth will prevail or not. The authors (including Jackie himself) do not aim to introduce any strong plot twists into the narrative, even if they are based on clichés — everything is prosaic and mundane. But it is possible (as one version suggests) that he deliberately created a double image or subtext for himself, ultimately showing that he can play not only smiling boys, but also serious psychological roles... And for that, thank you.
This time, Jackie doesn't sing in the film, and the musical accompaniment is generally lacking. It's a shame.
Conclusion: a decent film, but terribly monotonous and “correct.” It can only be recommended to the most devoted fans; for everyone else, rewatch “The Snack Bar on Wheels” or “The Bronx Showdown” for just as much enjoyment as the first time. (But apparently that's the case for all fans of Chan's talent).
