Have you ever thought that Baba Yaga is not only an evil sorceress with magical powers, but also a sensual lesbian with a penchant for sadistic entertainment? If not, then watch Corrado Farina's film of the same name. Yes, in the 20th century, the old woman acquired an expensive car, a wide-brimmed hat with a veil, and stylish makeup.
“It's already three in the morning.
My favorite time of day.”
For Valentina, a fashion photographer, life doesn't start before noon. A creative profession, a director boyfriend, endless parties — these are the main components of Valentina's bohemian lifestyle.
And into this familiar, albeit not entirely correct, existence, a mysterious woman calling herself Baba Yaga intervenes, bringing with her a series of inexplicable events.
These events frighten Valentina, but she hesitates to accept the fact that they are real, sometimes confusing them with her imagination. In an attempt to figure things out, she goes to Baba Yaga's house, hoping that this visit will help shed light on the questions that are troubling her. But even more questions arise, Valentina is completely lost, and after much hesitation, she decides to tell her lover Arno everything.
“Our world is full of people with strange views.”
Arno reacts to Valentina's story as one would expect from someone who does not believe in the supernatural — he begins to joke with his girlfriend and tries to calm her down.
Valentina realizes that she can no longer cope with the inexplicable desire that controls her, forcing her to return to Baba Yaga's house. And perhaps she would have disappeared there, succumbing to the witch's spells, but Arno saves her in time. The obsession disappears. What seemed otherworldly becomes familiar, what was once frightening is now quite tangible and palpable: the endless hole in the floor turns into a regular leaky floor, the scary shadows turn into a pile of rags, and Baba Yaga herself... into an ordinary old doll.
“I play a game in which contradictions are the main rule.”
Not everyone will like this film. It can be described in one word: strange. The viewer will not find a dynamic plot or clear explanations, but will be left with many questions, the main one being: what was that? Was it the fantasy of the main character or something otherworldly that appeared in the mocking, skeptical, distrustful 20th century in such a bizarre form?
