A good action movie always captivates with its subtext and minor details. And this film by Menahem Golan surprises with its abundance of nuances.

First of all, the conflict itself is reset. Often in films of this kind, deadly clashes are caused by irreconcilable differences. But here it's a completely different story. The main character faces criminal American businessmen who force him to sell a large plot of land. They offer him a lot of money. And he doesn't mind. It's all about his wife.

The paradox is that his desire to please his wife conflicts with their relationship. They are at odds. They have different outlooks on life and different temperaments.

In other words, there might not have been any conflict at all. It would have been enough to simply think about the relationship. However, this is the key to understanding our protagonist—during the war, he dreamed of a peaceful family life.

Now let's talk about the character Franco Nero. He is not just the possessor of secret Japanese knowledge. He is the equivalent of Rambo. A killing machine. During the war, he decided that when it ended, he would look for another war. All he needs is a formal reason. And then the reign of violence begins.

Is it necessary to kill mercenaries if it is enough to kill their boss? Is it necessary to protect a married couple if you are contributing to marital infidelity?

It seems that Franco Nero's character has no answers to these questions. And these contradictions give the film depth.

By the way, I would highly value his “I'll be back” — perhaps this is where Schwarzenegger or James Cameron borrowed it from.

Three other characters deserve special mention.

Susan George's character goes far beyond the meek female role in a genre action film. She is a woman who is the source of conflict, while suffering from it herself. He seeks adventure and prefers to take action, but is she ready to take responsibility for her actions?

The character of Sho Kosugi is another matter. He is like Iago from Shakespeare's Othello, permanently envious of Franco Nero's character. Hiding behind beautiful words about honor and morality, he is mired in self-deception.

Tzahi Noy dilutes this gallery of images. He is a funny half-villain, half-cripple. Behind his smile lies something cruel and at the same time comical. And the hook instead of one of his hands only enhances the emotional effect. For Tzahi, this was probably one of the best roles of his career.
