I watched this film when it was released on VHS, and at the time it didn't make much of an impression on me, except perhaps for Viggo Mortensen. But now, years later, everything has fallen into place, and the film's greatness is undeniable to me.
Ridley Scott knows better than anyone how to make movies about strong women in a way that looks natural and cool. Contemporary filmmakers, who work through story quotas for the sake of a check mark, are not even close to being able to do this. If the film came out now, it would definitely be a sensation. And Demi Moore had already proven back then that she could take risks and go beyond being “a pretty face on screen.”
The film is shot with a steady hand, has a good pace, and the plot is very interesting to follow — the golden 90s! A small dose of romantic flair does not spoil the film, but rather smooths out the overall combative mood.
The acting is superb! The charismatic Anne Bancroft as a cynical senator and Viggo Mortensen as a drill sergeant are truly memorable. The famous fight between Demi and Viggo and the subsequent mini-dialogue about “looking for an easier life elsewhere” and the delicious, scathing reply are simply powerful!
Moore herself does not get lost at all against such seasoned partners and looks dignified, playing and living the character to the limit of her abilities — in fact, in addition to her acting skills, the actress's incredible physical form speaks for itself. The cast underwent grueling training similar to that shown in the film.
All in all, it's a masterful film, just as it is. A solid and well-crafted genre piece. I enjoyed watching it again!
