There are films that you stumble upon 15 years after their release, although it would seem that you have already scoured all the existing horror recommendations over the years. To be honest, the only thing that attracted me to this film before watching it was director William Friedkin, who once directed The Exorcist of the Devil. At the same time, the synopsis of the film promised a budget version of ‘Scream’ or ‘When a Stranger Calls’, the trailer was reminiscent of 2013's “Infection”, and some shots from the film gave the impression that the viewing would slip into incoherent thrash and would not last more than half an hour. However, the film managed to exceed such low expectations several times. Since all the expected disadvantages were completely levelled and the film made an extremely good impression, let's dwell only on the pluses of this horror film. The first plus is the entourage. Dirt, unkemptness, unhealthy lifestyle of the main characters repel at least on the visual level, but at the same time the characters are perceived as ordinary people and cause compassion. The film seems honest, shows all sides of life (for example, how the main character sits on the toilet with the door open and starts to rush awkwardly when a guest arrives). The next plus is that from some scenes you just can't stand it. The characters' dialogues, their inferences and even some forms of violence towards each other make you laugh so hard that it's impossible to watch the film with a serious face. Because of this, towards the end you get the false impression that the film was made for the sake of thrash. But in the end every little thing falls into place (for example, there is an explanation for the ridiculous shots with onions in the supermarket, which seem to have been inserted accidentally). While watching, it's not clear who is crazy, who is lying, who is real. You're flailing from one version to another, which is exacerbated by the conspiracy theories the characters are building. In short, expecting to see at best something on the level of the sequel of ‘The Wrong Turn’, I was lucky to get acquainted with a very decent horror film, which is able to scare, make you laugh and make you think.
