It is important to understand that the remake of the franchise should not be viewed as a remake in its pure form, as the film has just as much to do with the Wrong Turn franchise as it does with the Hills Have Eyes franchise. The filmmakers avoided the themes of cannibalism and genetic abnormalities. It is now a completely different story, linked to the previous films only by the minor fact that a group of young people got lost in the woods.

The first half of the film may confuse the viewer a little, as it is very reminiscent of any slasher film from the 2000s: a group of young people go for a walk, get lost, and head straight into a trap set by monsters. But closer to the middle of the film, the plot really takes a turn in the wrong direction—it strays from the beaten path of the standard slasher and develops the storyline in a new direction that is different from the original.

Without giving away any spoilers, the characters wander into a remote mountain forest, where a closed community with its own customs and rules has lived for decades. They don't like strangers, but they don't harm them either. Having entered enemy territory, the film's characters encounter the hostility of the forest rednecks, who condemn all uninvited guests to a terrible fate. Parallel to the story of the tourists, there is a detective storyline involving the father of one of the characters, who is searching for his missing daughter and following in her footsteps.

The film leaves food for thought and raises the question: is this still Wrong Turn? Yes and no. Very little remains of the original; there is no dismemberment, cannibalism, freaks with butcher knives, or the standard “run away or you'll be killed” plot. It's a completely different story, told in a different key and with a fairly strong and, most importantly, interesting plot (unlike most of today's films, which are carbon copies of each other), which sticks to the clichés at the beginning but then takes a sharp turn.
Was this change beneficial? We'll see from the audience's reaction. It's hard to judge whether the franchise is moving in the right direction, because there's the example of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where the change in format didn't produce the desired result.

P.S. After watching it, I was very surprised that no one bothered to contact the police or the FBI — it was very funny.
