An epic departure from the norm by Cimino — nearly three hours of pure catharsis, where the idyll of a small town is shattered by the nightmare of Vietnam. De Niro is at his peak — a steel-willed hunter breaking under the weight of war, carrying the entire drama on his shoulders with such force that it gives you goosebumps. Woken in Roulette is simply a chilling masterpiece (the Oscar for the role is 100% deserved), and Streep adds touching warmth, foreshadowing her future fame. The rest of the cast (John Savage, John Casey) perfectly conveys brotherhood and loss.
The 4K restoration is out of this world: the snowy Appalachians in HDR shine like a living canvas, with incredible detail in every deer and drop of sweat; the jungles of Vietnam suffocate with hyper-realistic darkness, and the close-ups of faces are soul-stirring. The Dolby Atmos sound amplifies every shot and click of a revolver, immersing you completely.
The downsides are minimal: the drawn-out wedding prologue (almost 40 minutes) sets the pace but tests your patience, and the political correctness of the 2020s can strain the captivity scenes. But that's the price of genius — the film is not just about war, but about the human soul. For fans of Coppola, Scorsese, and Stone, it's an absolute must-see. A timeless classic that never gets old.
