The Substitute 4K 1996 Ultra HD 2160p

After a botched mission in Cuba, professional mercenary Shale and his crew Joey Six, Hollan, Rem, and Wellman head home to Miami, Florida, where Shale is reunited with his fiance Jane Hetzko, who is a history teacher at Columbus High School in Miami. Some of Jane's students happen to be members of a street gang known as the "Kings of Destruction" (KOD), led by Juan Lacas, who has been terrorizing Jane. After Jane's kneecap is broken by a big seminole named Bull, she tells Shale that she believes Lacas ordered the attack, so Shale goes undercover as Jane's substitute, and initially, Jane has no idea that Shale is doing this. At the school, Shale meets principal Claude Rolle, librarian Hannah Dillon, and english and drama teacher Darrell Sherman. It turns out that Lacas is one of Jane's students. As Shale investigates the attack on Jane, he discovers that drugs are being circulated into the school. Shale even investigates local drug kingpin Johnny Glades, who may or may not have someone inside the school distributing the drugs for him. Lives are threatened as Shale investigates and sets out to clean up the crime infested school.

User Review

I was expecting something completely different from this movie... But let’s start from the beginning. Everything is very predictable. It was practically clear from the very start who the main villain was. And the plot itself is simple and straightforward. Although, the fact that the plot is simple is already intuitively clear from the movie’s title. After all, action movies with the theme of “the teacher came and defeated the gang” can’t exactly boast of a convoluted plot.

The acting is solid. It doesn’t stir up a storm of emotions, but you don’t feel like shouting “I don’t believe it!” either.

The film’s strengths include:

1. The teacher doesn’t try to reform the students or turn them into decent people. The film’s protagonist didn’t set that as his goal. And that’s refreshing. It’s refreshing that the hero, who came to the school to deal with the school gang and the troublemakers, doesn’t try to set them on the straight and narrow.

2. It’s nice that Shale, even though he’s a “soldier of fortune,” doesn’t act like Rambo. If the enemies have guns, he puts on a bulletproof vest. If there are far more criminals, he calls in his mercenary friends.

On the downside, again, there’s the plot and the fact that the other characters are essentially just background noise. For example, Sheil’s mercenary friends are just cannon fodder. And Sheil himself is just a “substitute teacher.” I won’t even mention the gangsters (criminals are cannon fodder in every movie).

But the biggest downside of the movie is that it’s forgettable. He shows up, kills everyone, and leaves. And that’s it... I don’t think anyone will watch it again after seeing it once or twice.
