Argentina is a country where gambling and divorce are illegal. Johnny Farrell (Ford), a slick con artist and card shark, wins a dice game and walks away with his winnings. As he counts his money on the street, a robber holds a gun to the back of his head, but the stranger knocks the weapon away with a cane that has a retractable blade. This is the mysterious Balin Mandson (McRedy)—the owner of a gambling house. Mandson was impressed by Johnny’s quick wit and logical reasoning, and he hired him to work at his casino. Johnny became the right-hand man of the man who saved his life. Things take a troubling turn when Balin returns from a trip with the beautiful Gilda (Hayworth), a singer from New York. Johnny and Gilda used to know each other quite well, but now their relationship resembles hatred more than passion. Balin, however, is madly in love with Gilda. How will things play out in this love triangle?..

Formally, the film is a romantic thriller. Rita Hayworth sings beautifully in the movie. Although the film is shot in black and white, it is a pleasure to watch.

User Review

Although Rita Hayworth was not a brilliant actress, she managed to make her mark not only in the history of cinema. A photograph taken for *LIFE* magazine cemented her status as a “sex symbol,” and everyone referred to her as the “Goddess of Love.” According to film experts, her most famous film is the film noir “Gilda.”

The film’s plot is simple and unpretentious, as is typical for films of this genre: small-time con artist Johnny Farrell, having arrived in Argentina, meets casino owner Balin, who saved Johnny from death. Soon, Johnny becomes Balin’s right-hand man. But when Balin returns from another trip with a woman named Gilda—whom he married after knowing her for just one day—things start to go differently than before. It turns out Gilda and Johnny were once very close, and to make matters worse, all sorts of suspicious characters begin showing up at the casino. The intrigue snowballs… It should be noted that the main plotline of film noir is the detective story, which takes precedence over everything else. However, in Vidor’s film, the detective plot is merely a backdrop. In reality, the viewer is shown a story of passion and the tragedy of the “little man.” So who are these “little men”? The answer is simple—they are Johnny and Hilda. Johnny is a small-time con artist who, by a twist of fate, found himself in a ballroom. And the fateful beauty Hilda, who embodies the height of elegance, is in reality a lonely and unhappy woman forced to languish in her “golden cage.”

At the time, critics tore the film to shreds, calling it “unimaginable drivel,” but it was precisely this role that elevated Rita Hayworth to the pantheon of cinematic icons of the era. And it must be said that Hayworth looks simply perfect on screen. From her very first appearance in the film, when she tosses her luxurious hair back and her face appears in a close-up with a charming smile, to that famous moment when the actress slowly slips off her black glove during a musical number—it’s impossible to take your eyes off her. You can be an excellent actress, conveying the subtlest nuances and the character’s personality, with all its emotional ups and downs, but you may not possess the magnetism that Rita Hayworth possessed.
