User Review

John Klein is a prominent journalist who lost his wife two years ago. In the final days of her life, she drew strange silhouettes with glowing eyes in her notebook. And now he has encountered them again—in a small town he ended up in under completely mysterious circumstances. The locals see a mysterious figure who calls himself The Mothman Prophecies and foretells disaster. And yet the state governor is about to arrive at the local chemical plant... John and Connie, a local police officer, try to make sense of the situation.

You have to admit, it turned out great. The creators of ‘The Mothman Prophecies’ don’t overdo the mysticism and try not to fall into clichés about creaking doors and strange phone calls (though they don’t do without them entirely). The focus of this story is on the psychological aspect—the struggles of a protagonist confronting his past. He wants to understand what is happening, how it relates to his wife, and what exactly this mysterious figure wants from him. Connie, weary of the mass panic, wants to restore order and grows attached to the unfortunate, lonely stranger. And the crowd is simply panicking, yet still ready to give in to the Christmas spirit. The film’s atmosphere is edgy, tense—pure suspense.

It’s also beautifully shot—cold winter tones, a dark forest, a gloomy sky. The cinematography doesn’t particularly stand out, but it’s not bad either. The only truly memorable scenes are the one on the forest highway and the finale, but even those work because of the overall atmosphere, not because of any special camera angles, which aren’t present here. But there are no complaints either.

There are complaints about the plot, specifically—about that very mysticism. The deliberate avoidance of it and the attempt to shroud it in mystery created a problem—the theme isn’t really explored. There’s a lot of talk about The Mothman Prophecies, but neither its purpose nor its origin is particularly clear. The comments from the paranormal expert—another cliché the film couldn’t escape—don’t really clarify anything. So it remains something that is neither helpful nor harmful, nor is it simply playing games. And how did it lead the hero to a place located six hundred miles off his route? That’s a real mystery. And a pair of rather tasteless screamers comes with the package.

It’s not exactly an unsolvable problem—a mysterious force that doesn’t know what it wants can be shown; "Final Destination" won’t let you lie. But to do that, you need to manipulate not clichés, but more subtle elements. Maybe it wasn’t worth drawing such a clear line between the mystical and the psychological?

Still, if the film makes you think about such things rather than who’s going to get killed in the next scene, then it’s already unconventional and interesting. And it’s well acted—though only Richard Gere, in the lead role, really had anything to work with. The rest, though superficial, are also memorable and don’t come across as mere cannon fodder or contrived love interests. It’s clear that the screenwriter tried to portray people, not just extras.

'The Mothman Prophecies' is a decent, if somewhat underdeveloped, example of psychological horror. Well-filmed, intelligent, excellently acted, and generally enjoyable—it has almost everything going for it. Even viewers who aren’t usually into horror movies might enjoy it.
