The film “United 93” about the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S. gives viewers a complete understanding of what was happening in the airspace when terrorists hijacked four passenger planes.

The film’s plot focuses on the hostage situation aboard Flight UAL93. On September 11, terrorists hijacked four passenger planes. The hijackers flew two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, while another crashed into the Pentagon. The hijackers of the fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, were repelled by the passengers and failed to achieve their goal. This is the story told in the film.

A major strength of “United 93” is its straightforward chronology. It’s worth noting that the film itself runs about two hours, while at the beginning of the film it’s stated that the flight will last five hours and 25 minutes. The viewer is, in a sense, invited to experience the events in roughly the same timeframe as the characters.

Another distinctive feature of the film is that there is no single main character through whom the story is told. In fact, there are three main groups in the film: the passengers on the airliner, the terrorists, and the airline representatives and military personnel.

The film doesn’t evoke deep emotional reactions; rather, it depicts in as much detail as possible everything that happened on the hijacked plane: panic, rash decisions, adrenaline, and attempts to escape.

The film is equally successful in conveying the state of mind of the military personnel and airline representatives. At first, the characters act strictly according to emergency protocols, showing no emotion and not even believing that what is happening is real. Then, like a snowball, panic builds—all of which comes across clearly thanks to the film’s excellent editing.

The film’s finale underscores the clarity of the narrative: it is unambiguous, brutal, and precise. Even viewers who know how the story of United Airlines Flight 93 actually ended will still be deeply moved by the conclusion.
