Milwaukee, late 1980s. Mike (Hugh Jackman), a Vietnam War veteran and recovering alcoholic, meets Claire (Kate Hudson), a spirited single mother. Both are excellent singers; they fall in love, and then decide to perform together on stage, naming their duo “Thunder and Lightning.” The characters specialize exclusively in songs by Neil Diamond, the writer of the timeless “Sweet Caroline.” Unexpectedly, their career “takes off”—they start getting invited to concerts, and their fan base keeps growing. Fate intervenes, however—the couple is struck by various tragedies that completely derail their touring activities.

Two musicians, Claire and Mike, from Milwaukee dream of singing, creating, and performing. Claire is a part-time hairdresser and a single mother, but she loves music with all her heart; Mike is a divorced man who has been “on the straight and narrow” for 20 years, having traded one addiction for another—music. They make ends meet by performing old songs at festivals and celebrations, dressed up as famous artists. Mike is tired of mere imitations; he wants to take the stage and convey the artist’s emotions through himself—as if translating the songs the way he feels them—and Claire is happy to help him. So they form the tribute band “Lightning and Thunder” and embark on a simple tour of other small towns with a repertoire of Neil Diamond songs.

The tour doesn’t start off smoothly, but after a while, people begin to enjoy their concerts, the band gains fame, and their love grows stronger. But tragedy strikes the family, and their dream shatters into pieces, leaving only apathy, anger, and disappointment in its wake. Nevertheless, they remain together, and their love serves as a pillar of support for one another, through both good times and bad.

The plot is more reminiscent of a melodramatic TV series, where the characters wholeheartedly pursue their dreams, but are often knocked off course—both literally and figuratively. The result is a dramatic film tinged with nostalgia for the music and way of life in small-town America.

The charming Hugh Jackman and the stunning Kate Hudson, who received an Oscar nomination. Their characters are lively, ordinary people—aging small-town residents who need a little joy in their lives.

Essentially, this is a biopic about an American tribute band and the obstacles that stand in the way of their dream. They don’t create anything of their own, but they love music with all their hearts and want to sing; they want to share their energy with the masses. Tribute bands are popular in America because they give music a second chance, allow audiences to hear live renditions of hits that the original artists no longer perform, evoke a pleasant sense of nostalgia, and share the history of music with a new generation. And that’s all the characters need.
