This film is the natural culmination and outcome of Tarkovsky’s philosophical quest. Having failed to find a Living God who demands moral heroism and constant self-discipline from humanity, Andrei Arsenyevich, like many of his predecessors, turns to magic. “Pull the string, and the door will open!” Sleeping with a maid to save the world from nuclear war—that’s even more outrageous than swimming across a pool holding a candle (which Yankovsky’s character did in *Nostalgia*)!

You could call this subjective idealism, or classify it as a form of pantheism—but the essence of the matter remains the same. The foundation of Tarkovsky’s worldview is placing his “self” at the center of the universe. But artistic truth refutes the author’s own philosophical fabrications: the “saviors of the world” turn out to be ordinary lunatics with suicidal mania.

And why save the world if it’s already been saved? All that’s required of us is to accept the fruits of that salvation.

Errors in reasoning lead a person into spiritual dead ends, and the inertia of sin prevents them from shifting into reverse to return to the main road. Once he hit a wall, Tarkovsky spent his whole life banging his head against it. But that’s still better than not striving for anything at all, and spending your whole life lying on the couch in self-satisfaction and self-admiration.
