The film alternates between flashbacks to the past and glimpses of the future. Calum (Paul Mescal), a young father, spends his summer vacation in Turkey with his 11-year-old daughter, Sophie (Frankie Corio). As they spend time together, their bond grows stronger. Many years later, Sophie, now an adult, reflects on the time they spent together and how that trip completely changed her life.

11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Coriol) spends time with her young father (Paul Mescal), who has only recently turned thirty but has already begun to experience a severe midlife crisis. One could say that this is an autobiographical work by Charlotte Wells. Her father died when she was 16, and so she depicts the time she spent with him.

The film features scenes shot with a handheld camera. This adds a sense of nostalgia and sadness for childhood days. Now I realize just how difficult it will be to watch the footage. Joyful memories from the past...

Calum and Sophie Patterson are on vacation in Turkey. This could be called a common experience for most families. Here, Sophie meets her first love, discovers the troubled world of adolescence, and has no idea how much her father is suffering inside. He’s still young, but he’s already emotionally broken and shattered. He looks wistfully at intact families. He was unable to keep his own together, and now his daughter is forced to juggle two different worlds. But to Calum, she is his whole world. With his daughter, he can feel a surge of strength, if only for a little while. By evening, the melancholy returns: cigarettes, Zen Buddhism.

From the very first seconds, it’s clear this is a sad movie. At the very least, it strikes a chord when it comes to the relationship with his father. You realize that someday you’ll have to think back on your dad. It will be painful and difficult. The second thing that hits home is childhood. Sophie lets us dive back into those “all-inclusive” resorts, the endless sunshine, swimming in the sea. You don’t have to think about anything.

Director Charlotte Wells tugs at our heartstrings with her work, and it’s all because it’s real. Only the truth can make us cry.
