An anthology film retelling the story of the famous Studio 54, a hot disco hangout for the social elite of New York. The movie follows several characters at once, some of whom are in desperate straits and on the verge of crashing.

“54”—the legendary New York City nightclub, a mecca of chic music and dancing in the ’70s, as well as debauchery and drugs. They say that the atmosphere and glamour that permeated Studio 54 set an unmatched standard for every nightclub that has ever existed. The owner of all this splendor was Steve Rabel (played by Mike Myers). “54” was an exclusive club (incidentally, the first club to introduce a door policy) where only very beautiful, very wealthy people, or simply celebrities were allowed in. Its dimensions were simply staggering—100 by 80 meters—and it was housed in a former theater building. Unfortunately, this beautiful story was destined to come to an end just 33 months after it began. The club was shut down due to various legal violations and illegal activities. But talk of the club’s splendor and atmosphere continues to this day.

The film’s plot itself is the story of a simple guy from a poor family who miraculously landed a job at “54,” behind the scenes of the club scene of the ’70s. Parallel to the brief career of young Shane O’Shea runs a narrative about New York’s bohemian life, about equally young and attractive people who were destined to become part of those unforgettable nights—to hold their ground, break through, and, of course, let loose inside the mecca of bohemian partygoers. The film’s screenplay is like a cocktail whose ingredients—in addition to dancing, sex, drugs, and careerism—also include the characters’ relationships, at times happy and passionate, at times bitter and sordid.

“Everything you see is true: from how they robbed the cash register in the middle of the night to the freaky old lady hanging out on the dance floor… The film also pays attention to the legendary balcony, although Paolo Miranda, a busboy, says that much crazier and more extraordinary things happened there than what’s shown in the movie… The film’s soundtrack includes actual music from the dance floor of Studio 54…”

Of course, the movie can’t be faulted for the most important thing. It transported viewers to a place they never dreamed of being, immersing them in the music and atmosphere of the ’70s. All that’s left is to slowly savor the sounds of Silver Convention or Miracles.
For many, including myself, the film’s only major drawback was its short running time.
