The terrorist seems to know everything Calder and the FBI say and do, and insists that Calder deliver the blackmail money personally at an amusement park in Virginia. After running Calder all over the park, the money drop is made and the terrorist gets away, but he discovers that the FBI had marked the money, making it useless to him. He plots to get revenge by blowing up a giant new roller coaster on its opening day, and it's up to Calder to stop him.

"Rollercoaster" is one of the more unintentionally ill-timed film releases. Why? Because the film debuted just after "Star Wars" debuted...and no one went to see "Rollercoaster". Well, no one except for a few oddballs...like me. I went because it had the gimmick called 'Sensesurround'....where huge bass amplifiers made the theaters rumble during scenes involving rollercoasters. I liked it...but now nearly 50 years later, did I still enjoy the film?
An evil electronics genius is planning on extorting a million dollars. It begins with him blowing up a rollercoaster full of people. He then arranges for a fire at another amusement park. A bureaucrat, Harry (George Segal), thinks there's a pattern developing and he soon begins investigating. During the course of his work, the bomber actually begins to feel some affinity with Harry...and forces him to deliver ransom money. However, after the bomber got the money, he realized it was marked and he's going to punish everyone in a very spectacular fashion! Can they stop him before yet another lethal attack?
For me, much of the enjoyment of the story was seeing the old amusement parks...especialy Kings Dominion which I have been to several times. Additionally the story is incredibly tense at times and a bit scary. My only reservations about the movie are minor...mostly because a few folks seemed one-dimensional (such as Richard Widmark) and some of Harry's backstory seemed unnecessary.
