Before watching it, I thought this might be Lynch’s most ordinary and conventional film—a ’90s-style road movie set across America. The main characters, played by Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, are sort of like Clyde and Bonnie. Together, they’re on the run from the law and a deranged mother who wants to put an end to their relationship.

The film kicks off a series of crime dramas from the ’90s. It’s very reminiscent of *Natural Born Killers*, written by Tarantino.

Love knows no bounds—that’s exactly what Lynch wants to convey to us. A symbol of this feeling appears at the end.

William Dafoe played a small but quite memorable role in this film. He would have fit right in with Tarantino’s *Reservoir Dogs* crew.

Throughout the entire film, what was happening on screen seemed strange to me: Lynch’s typical metaphorical techniques, a bizarre plot—but all of this built up to a specific moment: conversations in the night set to Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” The main characters are driving down a highway at night, the wind ruffling their hair, total darkness, philosophical conversations, and that beautiful song. After that scene, everything began to make sense and fall into place.

David Lynch proves once again that even with a weak and not very well-developed script, it’s still possible to make a very beautiful film.
