Some kids were playing “killer” among the ruins. One of the girls lost her footing and fell to her death because of the others' negligence. Six years later, during the school dance, the deceased girl's brother decided to take revenge, turning the school into a bloodbath.

User Review

A pretty good movie—that was my first impression. Now I’ll break down my thoughts. Let’s start with the positives:

1) I was most impressed by Jamie Lee Curtis—the queen of horror, after all—and following her triumph in "Halloween", she’s just the right fit here; her performance is believable, and she brings the character to life;

2) an interesting mystery plot; personally, I consider this movie to be exactly that—a mystery with thriller elements, nothing more, nothing less; I just can’t bring myself to call it a horror movie—it never gets scary in any of the scenes, but the desire to find out who the killer is only grows stronger;

3) The characters die “beautifully,” in full accordance with the genre’s conventions—it’s brilliantly conceived and performed;

4) And finally, what I liked most about the movie was the overall impression it left—yes, it’s not a classic like "Halloween" or "Friday the 13th", but it’s still an enjoyable watch, especially if you watch it alone late at night.

Now for the downsides:

1) There’s not much action—or rather, the action is too drawn-out as the story builds up to the prom and the revenge. Spending an entire hour setting the stage for the murders feels a bit tacky on the part of the screenwriter and director; it leaves you with very little desire to watch the movie through to the end, especially knowing that it’s supposed to be a horror film;

2) The killer could have done better—he’s some pathetic amateur. He’s not scary at all when you look at him; he looks more like a petty thief. This mysterious killer in a black suit and black mask didn’t impress me at all;

3) The scene where Kim and her boyfriend fight the killer is downright laughable—on a dance floor set to the dance beats of the late ’70s and early ’80s; if they’d just played Elvis or ABBA, it would at least have been genuinely funny;

4) It was clear from the start that this was all about revenge and that the killer was at the scene of the girl’s death at the time, yet the filmmakers go out of their way to show the audience every potential suspect—from an escaped psychopath and a janitor all the way to Leslie Nielsen himself—so the suspense never quite gets your nerves going.

All in all, this movie has far more downsides than upsides, but it’s still interesting—especially since ‘Prom Night’ is one of the first slasher films. It may seem boring, and many will find it so, but you should still watch it all the way through—it’s a piece of film history with its original premise and effective ending.
