American tourists travel through Europe in search of sexual adventures, but in one small town in Slovakia, there’s a place where even the most terrifying fantasies can come true. It is there that sin has been elevated to a cult, and a painful death is the best payment for the services provided… What price are adventure seekers willing to pay for the unknown, and how far might their instinct for self-preservation take them?..
User Review
When I first watched this movie the year it came out, it completely killed my desire to visit Europe. Later, while reading reviews of the film, I learned about the subgenre known as “torture porn,” which includes *Saw*.
How does the movie hold up now, nearly twenty years later? Surprisingly, it’s a pretty solid thriller, though it’s full of Eastern European clichés. Bratislava is portrayed here as some kind of remnant of a socialist nightmare, rife with ruin, crime, and brutality—even though the city is actually among the top five most prosperous cities in Europe.
According to the plot, there’s an organization whose members enjoy torturing and then killing people—but not just any people, only those of a certain nationality. Americans are the most valuable targets. To torture and kill them, you have to pay $25,000. Local women seduce tourists and lead them to the torture chambers. This is how the main characters become targets of this local blood-soaked business.
For some reason, in my memory the movie was full of torture and murder, but in reality there were only a couple of scenes—though they were extremely gory, so much so that the unpleasantness of the spectacle makes your blood run cold. A full half of the movie consists of rather boring adventures across Europe and introductions to the characters. So why do I only remember the torture?
It seems to me that the film has remained a symbol of its era. Just like in *Eurotour*, Eastern Europe is portrayed as a run-down region of the former Eastern Bloc, and everyone is part of a state conspiracy to capture and kill people for entertainment. The stereotypes are quite jarring.
Who to recommend it to: It’s just as much a staple of its rare genre as *Saw* was. Blood, torture, filthy basements, and brutal murders—torture porn in all its glory.
