People in the '70s and '80s were, like, a lot more naive. They could get mad at a movie where Santa Claus was the killer, and they could give rides to anyone without fear. So you're driving along, you see a hitchhiker, looks suspicious, but it's probably paranoia, but it's just a normal guy, he sits down next to you, then you look at his face and realize you've made a fatal mistake.
The same story happened to Jim in the movie 'The Hitcher'. The movie has a very well done suspense. Take the beginning of the movie, when Jim is approached by a hitchhiker. At first it seems that he's just a strange type, but when the hero notices the car that gave the hitchhiker a ride before him, he asks what happened to the driver, and the hitchhiker says, in an emotionless, cold-blooded voice, as if he was asked who his favorite baseball player was, that he killed him and is going to do it to Jim too. And when Jim pushes him out of the car, the hitchhiker says with his gaze looking at the hero's departing car, 'This isn't over boy, you're going to wish you'd chosen a quick death.' And the movie is made up of moments like that.
The actors have acted very well. The protagonist Jim turned out to be a very sympathetic character. He is a kid who is just unlucky and because of this he is pitied.
The maniacal hitchhiker turned out to be frightening. Every time he appears in the frame goosebumps run down my skin, especially his ability to keep everything under control, even his emotions. There was not a single moment when he was angry, there are only two emotions on his face: Smile, which does not bode well and complete calmness.
The deaths here, even though they take place off-screen, are done in such a way that the images of the corpse loom in your head. For example, when at the beginning of the movie, when Jim was able to get rid of the hitchhiker, he finds a trailer with a family of two parents and one girl riding in it, and as he looks through the glass to see what happened inside, he starts to feel nauseous and quickly walks back to his car. What did the hitchhiker do to the bodies that Jim vomited and rushed to his car?
