`Friday the 13th' is an amazing horror series that has overtaken other notable horror series in the number of sequels. `The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' ended at the 4th part, got a remake and a prequel; `The Nightmare on Elm Street' ended at the 7th part (there was nowhere to move the series further - the films began to copy each other, and by the end of his `The Nightmare on Elm Street' turned into an earlier version of `Very Scary Movie'), the restart of the famous series is scheduled for 2010; `Halloween' overtook `Nightmare on Elm Street', ending at 8 installments, so far it is `Halloween' that has more remakes than other legendary horror series - 2 remakes have been released, the 3rd is in production.
So, `Friday the 13th`, in addition to the original film in 1980 has 9 sequels, the last of which was released in 2001 and is called `Jason X`, got a remake of the original this year, in 2010 is scheduled for a remake of the second part, ie, the film, which I am now reviewing. There's also the controversial `Freddy vs. Jason' movie. Essentially this crossover can't be categorized as either universe, because that's exactly what it is.
Now from the franchise, let's move seamlessly to the 1981 movie `Friday the 13th - Part 2`.....
What can I say, the original I weightily overestimated: the movie was a score of 6 for a modern viewer, for a contemporary of the movie - on 8-ku, but I put the original all 9. After all, it was the original that started the magnificent 10-episode series. The second part of the movie is many times better than the original: the movie turned out to be much more atmospheric, much more mysterious, much scarier (although what is scary there?).... In general, the sequel was ahead of the original on all points.
In the first part we were shown Jason only at the very end (well, one more time in flashback - about how he drowned). In the original, people died one by one, but it wasn't clear until the last quarter of the movie who was killing them, until it turned out that it was a mother taking revenge on all the counselors that exist on the planet for the fact that completely different counselors a long time ago didn't look after her son Jason. It is from the sequel onward that the role of the maniac in the movie goes from Jason's mother directly to Jason himself.
Cool movie came out, but Jason Voorhees in 1981 was yet to become one of the most famous along with Freddy, Michael Myers and Leatherface as a horror movie maniac. In Part 2, Jason still does not wear his legendary mask, but wraps a white sheet around his head. And the maniac himself is revealed badly in the 2nd part, but there is more than one sequel to come....
Verdict. The second part of `Friday the 13th` is still the beginning of one of the longest running horror series. More about Jason we have yet to learn more in the next installments.
