It is the fact that a strange unearthly virus, which deprives people of any feelings, has struck Washington, D.C., that in the understanding of Hirschbigel and the film's producer, the famous Joel Silver Matrix, The (1999), is the beginning of a universal catastrophe. If the people responsible for making the most important decisions for the world are hit first of all, the tragedy will not pass. One of the heroes of “The Invasion”, one Tucker Kaufman (Jeremy Northam), head of the Center for Disease Control, accidentally caught a virus and decides to infect America. And now in all major cities there are centers of “flu vaccination”, and people stop recognizing their loved ones: after the injection and deep sleep, a person turns into a cold animal. Crowds of emotional cripples roam the streets and catch those who have not been “vaccinated” ... The young son of the protagonist Carol Bennel (played by Nicole Kidman), who is immune to the disease, is captured by the same Tucker Kaufman. To rescue the child heroine is helped by boyfriend Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) and a handful of normal people (military and scientists), locked in a heavily guarded fort...

“The Invasion” failed miserably at the US box office. The movie, which cost 80 million dollars, collected in the States a little more than fifteen million. And here's why. Imagine a joyful American teenager with a skateboard under his arm, bought a ticket for five bucks for a fantastic thriller, and got to the movie, in which, for example, the Russian ambassador named Yuri Kaganovich makes a lengthy speech about the death of civilization and the nature of man. Not surprisingly, after reviewing the preliminary material, producer Silver panicked and pulled Hirschbigel off the project, calling in his buddies Larry and Andy Wachowski (“The Matrix”) to re-mount the movie and reshoot many of the scenes. Even so, if you read somewhere that “The Invasion” is sci-fi about a contagion from outer space, don't believe it. “The Invasion” is a big ideological bomb planted underneath the sweet-voiced Hollywood cinematography. The tendency, however: invited to the “factory of dreams” master from Europe, who got access to Hollywood budgets and facilities, immediately begins subversive activities. As, for example, the Frenchman Pitof, a few years ago put Catwoman (2004) with Halle Berry and Sharon Stone - the movie is actually about the fact that all evil from women. And now Hirschbigel for a good hour and thirty-six minutes pleases the viewer with the confrontation of the beautiful Kidman with zombies only to make a completely unacceptable for politically correct Hollywood movie statement at the very end. A world where no one fights, kills or commits terrorist acts is a world where people cease to be people.
