The action of the third installment of the blood-thirsty clown franchise unfolds on the eve of Christmas vacation in yet another small town. Awakened clown Art (David Howard Thornton) seeks revenge on Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and Jonathan (Elliott Fallam), brutally killing everyone who gets in his way.
Killer clown Art is a major character in Damien Leone's oeuvre. He first appeared in a short film “The Ninth Circle”, later included in his feature debut “All Saints' Day Eve”. In these tapes demonic clown played Mike Giannelli, a specialist operator team, later cooled to continue acting. So the face of Art became a voice actor David Howard Thornton, who gradually eclipsed Giannelli. Now in rent came out the fourth movie about clown pranks, and Damien Leone promises not to stop there.
Filmed for 35 thousand dollars the first “Terrifier” claimed only to the status of an underground cult, like Marcus Koch's clown horror “100 Tears”, but the interest in Leone's creation unexpectedly showed a wide audience. In the threequel budget grew to two million dollars, which the director spent on special effects and makeup. On the big screen, naturalistic violence has been shown before (enough to remember Eli Roth's horror films and the "Saw" franchise), but only Damien Leone successfully transferred to the mainstream underground aesthetics. The setting in his trilogy is gloomy basements and abandoned buildings that can scare by themselves. The victims are not just killed, but literally torn apart, as if to demonstrate that man is just a piece of flesh.
The director is not to be denied an original visual style. Throughout the tape, he breaks the time sequence, juggling episodes from both the future and the past of the main characters. For example, the bloody prologue, which shows the murder of an entire family, is snatched from the middle, after which the narrative returns to the finale of the second part. Leone then moves the action forward five years, when the clown Art and his new demonic girlfriend, who are in anabiosis in an abandoned house, are awakened by a team of workers.
The director didn't just need the non-trivial plot move to smoothly bring in grown-up actor Elliott Fallam. Another reason is that the director set a high standard of quality in the sequel, and therefore did not want to turn his picture into an endless series of sadistic murders. As before, Leone skillfully combines episodes of outright violence, reminiscent of the aesthetics of jallo, with elaborate dramaturgy. Not only are the main characters written out, but also many secondary characters. Each is delineated enough that the character of that character is understood. The main storyline continues the composition of “Terrifier 2”. Damien Leone alternates between scenes with Art and the narrative of siblings Sienna and Jonathan, movingly portraying their persistent attempts to get back on track. And, of course, these lines are sure to come together.
According to the laws of the genre, a series of horrific deaths has not gone unnoticed by the public, and therefore Sienna and Jonathan as the only survivors are at the center of the misplaced interest of mass murder fans who, without regard for their feelings, are eager to learn all the details. However, the hinted influence of the Scream franchise is successfully overcome by Damien Leone through black humor and a Christmas setting. Art the Clown himself modestly estimates his place in the motley gallery of mass murderers, but never tires of inventing more and more sophisticated ways of killing people. For example, he brutally mocks Santa Claus with the help of liquid nitrogen and a hammer (Hollywood veteran Daniel Roback is in this role). And instead of gifts in the bag Art has a whole arsenal of murderous devices, including a bomb. His image in the threequel is not limited to just psychopathic sadism. He is also a terrorist who sets off explosions, threatens with a gun, and takes hostages in order to get revenge on Sienna and Jonathan.
The Christian undertones, powerfully evident in the sequel, have not disappeared either. In flashbacks, the viewer is introduced to Sienna's father, who blesses his young daughter to fight evil like a prophet. In the final scene, Sienna wears a crown of thorns, referring to the atoning sacrifice of Christ. Inspired by the Christmas style, the director resorted to overt mysticism. Images of the otherworld, where Sienna's niece Gabi (Antonella Rose) is lost, both hint at the plot of the fourth installment and refer to Christ's descent into hell.
Damien Leone has once again managed to make a near-perfect horror movie, which is quite a challenge these days when audiences seem to be hard to surprise. Like the sequel, “Terrifier 3” works on different levels of perception. It is a slasher, loaded with black humor, and abundantly laced with naturalistic violence spatter, and drama about the difficulties of psychological rehabilitation after trauma, and a Christian parable about the struggle between good and evil. It is encouraging that the story of Art and Sienna is not over yet, because Leone still has trump cards up his sleeve.
