To begin with, the production process of this picture was quite curious. Initially, the movie was to be directed by Lee Wannell, and judging by the message on the Internet, the idea of the movie had exactly the outlines that eventually received. However, when Ryan Gosling became interested in the movie, Wannell left the director's chair to Derek Cienfrance, Wannell's idea went on the shelf, and new writers began writing the story of a so-called “neon thriller” a la “Stringer” with Gosling as a TV host slowly turning into a werewolf. It's never made clear why this particular incarnation didn't see the light of day. However, the studio eventually scrapped the idea, brought Wannell back to the director's chair, and seems to have chosen a much more budget-friendly option for the realization. What did it turn out to be? Let's break it down.

Blake learns that his father has mysteriously disappeared and is presumed dead. He inherited an abandoned family estate in Oregon. Their marriage to Charlotte is going through a rough patch, and Blake decides that a family trip will help them through the crisis. At night on the drive up to the house, their car is attacked by an unknown animal that injures Blake. In a panic, the family barricades themselves inside the house, hoping the beast will leave, but soon a monstrous transformation begins to happen to Blake.

It is obvious to the naked eye that after Invisible Man, Whannell has returned to the subject of domestic violence. However, whereas in Invisible Man this theme was at the forefront and was the engine of the entire story, in this case it turns out to be only tools to further develop the story in a different direction. Quite clearly, the cycle of violence is no worse than in the relatively recent “It's All Gonna End on Us”. When wanting to not be like our parents and not repeat their mistakes, we unwittingly commit them and how important it is to break this vicious cycle. In this case, hypervigilance. After all, as the main character says in one of the scenes, parents sometimes want so badly to shield their child from trauma that they unwittingly traumatize them themselves.

Exactly as a drama, the story develops really well and the main message is presented, albeit head-on, but quite effectively. Nevertheless, there are some things to pick on. For example, the main characters already appear in a state of crisis of family life and the authors do not give a single reason to compare how it was before and what they should fight for. I also lacked a much more worthy personal transformation of the main character from a selfish careerist to a caring mother. All this deprives the characters of some of their depth, does not allow you to fully empathize with them and partially dulls the overall drama of the story.

Nevertheless, one cannot but praise Wannell for reinterpreting the image of the wolf-man on the screen. It's as if Wannell deliberately incorporated all the canonical elements of the iconic monster and presented them in a completely different way. On the one hand, this is not what you expect from a movie with such a title. On the other hand, the movie clearly shows that the subject of werewolves still has something to surprise. The only thing that spoiled part of the impression is that shortly before the premiere (it seems to be afraid of failure in every possible way and trying to drag the audience into theaters), the authors of the picture first leaked the image of the wolf-man at one of the thematic events of the studios, and then in several promos. Which is silly with the way the first trailers of the picture hid his appearance.

It's also worth noting that the movie turned out to be not scary at all. “Invisible Man” also relied on the atmosphere, but did not forget to please the audience with spectacular and unexpected scrimmages. In this case, as such spectacular scenes are very few and the movie relies entirely on the atmosphere with a very slow build-up of suspense. However, the process of transformation of the hero in the spirit of David Cronenberg's “The Fly” with excellent make-up and practical effects, as well as the demonstration of the world through the eyes of the wolf-man are definitely impressive.

Christopher Abbott again demonstrated himself a first-class actor, who easily pulled out such a complex image. At times with virtually no lines. However, Ryan Gosling (as this is an unexpected role for him) would have been much more interesting for me to watch in a similar character. Julia Garner really tries and gives a strong performance. However, part of the impression of her performance is spoiled by the aforementioned aspect of the script, which does not allow you to fully convince in the personal transformation of her character.
