Another brilliant localization, which, in principle, will not deceive true fans of horror films. There is no relation to 'Astral' here. But there is a good post-horror. It's original. Well written. With a nice cast in the person of the main protagonist.
I've written before that in my 30s, the horror genre doesn't look the same as it used to. For the most part, I see these movies as either black comedy or a thriller at most, so I try to pay attention to the art and post-horror segment, where there is at least a sane controlling idea. Here I was lucky, though to a lesser extent than before. Yes, once again we'll see motherhood and sacrifice for the sake of a child, but at least it's not as cliched as the usual classic horror movies that came out earlier. The movie's camerawork is a plus: you don't need a big budget a la Muschetti's 'It' to tell a good story. The movie is quite entertaining, and the plot twists are interesting to watch. Good sound design and camerawork. Not bad makeup, special and practical effects. The open ending is spot on (check the right checkbox). I didn't like the way the movie was edited: a jagged chronology that doesn't work to the script's advantage, the confusing and ornate plot is not very appropriate either. It was possible to put everything in a normal sequence and not lose anything.
The acting is not bad, but, as befits such genre films, the main character in the person of Anna Camp steals all the screen time, and it is a pleasure to follow her throughout the narrative.
'From Black' is auteur cinematography by Thomas Marchese, who clearly scratched ideas from the once successful post-horror 'The Babadook'. Both are about the same thing. Only that one was better and more stylish, and here everything is default, like the rest of 'Shudder' production. You can skip it, but if you decide to watch it, you're unlikely to be disappointed, although, judging by the evaluation on aggregators, people were left in despondency.
