Halloween is like Christmas in reverse. Too much commercialism. Too much fun. Anything to forget how sticky fear can be at night. How scary it is to open the door to the one behind the door. How weak and helpless man is before the purposeful forces of evil.
“The Dark and the Wicked” is just such an anti-Halloween horror movie. It's real. No candy and no stupid pumpkins. It's a small farm in the middle of nowhere. The parents - a seriously ill father and a not quite mentally healthy mother - are visited by their adult children, Louise and Michael, against their parents' will. The father does not get out of bed, but everything seems not so hopeless - helps pious nurse, reliable neighbors, the priest visits. Only the lambs in the rickety stable are not silent. They hear better than anyone else how something very bad is coming. Some of the characters call it a wolf. Some call it the devil. Some call it evil. We don't know. But what we do know is that if the action is broken down by day of the week, starting on Monday, it's best to look no further than Sunday.
The movie is shot surprisingly “old-school” - with a minimum of special effects, with excellent shadow play and silhouettes - the characters constantly seem as if cut out of cardboard: standing against a brightly lit curtain, a blazing campfire, in a doorway. Boo effects and screemers are present, but it's much more subtle and interesting to follow the sound of the movie - the wheezing in the night, the creaking of the bed, the midnight howl. This is clearly a movie worth watching in the theater to get the shivers going.
It's a very simple but creepy story. In terms of scale it does not reach such samples of the genre about devilishness as “Omen”, but it has a very important common denominator with it - the feeling of not just the weakness of man before evil, but simply the impossibility to resist. The heroes do not fight the devil with candles and amulets - in fact, they just wait for the inevitable to happen. The kind caregiver voices what seems to be the only argument the characters have against the guise of evil - and that, of course, is love. The love of grown children for elderly parents. The love of parents for young children. And even the care of a newborn lamb. “The worst thing is to die alone,” the heroine pronounces, but not all heroes will be able to stay together. Because to run away is shameful and scary. But to die together with those you love - still means to die ...
