I can imagine 78-year-old Sylvester Stallone writing a script for his “brother” Jason Statham in The Expendables. Here's how Sly's thought process goes: “It's clear who the main character is. Seriously, though, the film shows how socially vulnerable former contract soldiers are. A Marine who served half his life for the glory of his country hasn't even earned enough to buy an apartment. In which film after film, it's easier for poor parents to find one guy who will give his word and find their child alive or dead, no matter what, than to go to the city police.

Jason Statham plays the same role. He plays it not with a stone face, but with iron fists as heavy as a hammer. Only the scenery changes. And we expect this from him and love it.

The girl has been kidnapped, which means the timer is ticking. Time is running out, and every second could be the last. There is no time to think or be delicate. And the scumbags are so vile that no one wants to forgive them or let them live. The spectacle is as bloody as it gets.

There is a profession called “soldier,” which Levon has mastered. Even the mafia fears marines, calling them “devils” because it is impossible to negotiate with them. These are people who have no fear or inhibitions, and their grip is iron.

The film is a little comical, but not because of the script, but because of the costume designers, who brought fantasy vampire costumes to the action movie set.

The fights are spectacular, with the use of weapons and improvised means. The chases with shooting are absurd. There are shootouts in closed rooms without ricochets. And our construction worker is armed with a tuned Kalashnikov with an auto sight and night vision device with a TFT display, which the mafia boss's guards do not have.
