User Review

Nowadays, it's boring without such “underwater” horror movies, which are being replaced by cheap trashy rip-offs based on horror movies from the 80s and 90s, such as Leviathan and DeepStar Six. Both films were released in the same year, 1989, and are very similar in terms of both plot and narrative. It's funny that the first film stars Peter Weller, who played the lead role in Robocop, and this one stars Miguel Ferrer, who also starred in Robocop. After watching both films, one gets the impression that two film crews set out to shoot the same movie in parallel studios at the same time, so that they could later compare which one turned out better.

The plot is simple: a mobile underwater laboratory “picks up” an unknown creature on the ocean floor, and in such sci-fi horror films, it is either a shark, a terrifying cephalopod, or, as in this case — a kind of shapeless mutant crab with giant jaws, as seen in the same “Earthquake.” Hollywood loves monsters, worms, insects, etc., and there's nothing you can do about it. As we know, if you show any creature, even the most monstrous one, at the beginning of the film, all interest will be lost by the middle of the film. That is why a standard technique is used - only attacks by unknown creatures are shown, as a result of which the crew members die one after another due to their sluggishness. Only the inevitable couple remains alive, eventually surfacing and destroying the sea mutant in the most primitive way.

Despite such a simple plot, there are only a few films like this, and the ones mentioned above are probably the most memorable. Probably because the underwater station sets and monster designs are so cool, with some of the monsters' mouths and tentacles being way more interesting than the whole creature jumping out of the water at the end. The demise of the deep-sea expedition participants is rated a B-minus — I'm sure that in the late 1980s, this could have made a great impression, and naturally, twenty years later, the effect is completely different. A decent cast and talented composers also compensate for the modest budget and confined spaces. Personally, I liked Leviathan more, but this counterpart also deserves attention.

In my opinion, it's a high-quality “deep-sea” horror film, practically a carbon copy of Leviathan.
