Upon returning from space, a rocket launched by a group of scientists led by Professor Bernard Quatermass crashes in the English countryside. Of the three crew members, two disappear, and the third turns into a hideous mutant who begins to destroy people and animals, feeding on their flesh to fuel further monstrous transformations of his body. Quatermass decides that this is the work of hostile alien life forms.

In 1953, the BBC aired the mini-series “The Quatermass Experiment.” Due to its unusual format, the series immediately became popular with viewers, as it was aimed at an adult audience, unlike other science fiction series of the time. The unusual plot, well-chosen actors, and innovative solutions spawned several sequels and two remakes. Unfortunately, only the first two episodes of the original series are available to viewers, as the rest were destroyed due to the BBC's policy of saving film...

But in 1955, the famous British horror studio Hammer produced a remake of the series, investing a record £42,000 for the studio. To promote the film in the West, American actor Brian Donlevy was cast in the lead role.

In the mid-1950s, humanity dreamed of conquering space. It seemed that in another 10-20 years, Earth's colonies would spread throughout the universe. Bernard Quatermass had the same idea. The professor decides to take a serious step, without waiting for approval from the authorities, and launches a rocket with the first three astronauts. The first three days of the experiment go well, but then contact with the rocket is lost and it crashes in the English countryside. Upon opening the rocket, scientists discover only one crew member, while the rest have disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only their spacesuits. And the survivor, to put it mildly, is behaving very strangely. He says nothing, hardly moves, and strange changes begin to occur in his body.

The main character is somewhat reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes, but instead of investigating complicated crimes, he has to fight an alien threat. Quatermass is cold, calculating, and willing to sacrifice a lot for the sake of a bright future for humanity. Therefore, he does not see the rocket crash as a terrible catastrophe, but rather as a breakthrough, only the first step on the path to space exploration. But his ideas are not shared by Inspector Lomax, Quartermass's opposite. Operating on facts, he sees this incident as nothing more than a crime—there is one survivor and two missing astronauts. Together, they make a good team in their attempt to find and capture the alien monster. The monster itself is quite passive at the beginning of the film. Having infected the astronaut with its spores, it slowly adapts to our world, studying our actions and habits. But by the middle of the film, it begins to attack people, trying to survive at all costs. The excellent work of the makeup artists is worth noting. The mutating astronaut looks naturally terrifying, and the murder scenes and the monster itself are simply delightful. Not all horror films of the 70s and 80s had such well-done makeup and special effects, which is why the film even received an ‘X’ rating. I would also like to mention the remarkable moment when we see the preserved footage from the rocket. We see a few minutes of the astronauts' lives on the rocket before the fateful attack. There is complete silence on the screen, only the hum of the projector can be heard, and excellent music plays, instilling fear in the then unsophisticated viewer.

Unfortunately, this series of films did not receive the attention it deserved, and after three series and remakes, it began to be forgotten. In 2005, there was an attempt to revive the franchise with a remake starring David Tennant in one of the leading roles. But, alas, the experiment was not successful.
